The Heavens - stage canopy

The canopy above the stage is composed of a series of panels, framed in gold and painted to represent the twelve figures of the zodiac. A ‘heavenly’ light in the centre disguises a trap door. The Heavens continue into the Lords’ Room behind the stage, with the gods of eloquence painted on either side of the stage. Above the stage, a frieze presents six planetary deities that, according to astrological beliefs, govern the destinies of the human beings whose lives are enacted on the stage below.
